What Is The BB Boom All About?

It promises to banish blemishes and to even the skin tone. It’s a moisturizer, a sunscreen, alight foundation – all rolled into one. Call it by whichever name you will – Blemish Balm, Beauty Balm or simply the BB cream – today every cosmetic brand worth its magic potions has mustered its own versions. BB creams are rich with the goodness of antioxidants and, in some cases, even work as anti-aging products. The latest jack-of-all-trades cosmetic has created a stir in world markets.

The cream – a multi-tasking concealer with properties that help partly cover sunspots and over-sized pores – has taken over approximately a third of Korea‘s cosmetics market since 2011. The craze for this all-in-one formulation that kick-started in Korea has now spread its tentacles in Japan, China, Southeast Asia, India, Europe and the US. A number of brands have launched their versions of the blemish-banning cream. Shop-shelves of cosmetic giants like L’Oreal (with its subsidiaries Kiehl’s, Maybelline and Garnier). The Body Shop, VedicLine+, Ponds and Estee Lauder are heaving with BB Creams. The versatile product is even being touted as a replacement for the daily moisturizer by L’Oreal.

Blemish BalmFrom tubes to sticks and glide-on serums, BB creams come in all shapes and sizes infused with a variety of ingredients. Deconstructed, BB creams usually contain zinc oxide or titanium oxide that act as sunblocks and also offer water-resistant properties. There are BB creams that contain anti-aging components, including peptides and antioxidants such as vitamins A, E and C. Most include moisturizing work-horses like hyaluronic acid and glycerin in them while ingredients such as licorice and arbutin help even out skin tone. BB creams have become a hit because it isn’t age-specific and can be used by teenagers and anyone who wants to rejuvenate their skin. The coverage is just right for those who don’t want to apply a lot of make-up. This cream is especially good for those who don’t have the time or inclination for doing make-up. It conceals blemishes, gives radiance to the skin and even provides protection from the sun. One fingertip unit of the cream per day is sufficient and it should ideally be removed with a toner and cleanser at night. If you are using the cream primarily to conceal blemishes, and sunspots, a layer of foundation can be applied on top of the BB cream for more cover.

Estee Lauder BB Cream

And you don’t always have to shell out a lot for your BB. Most BB creams start at approximately $11.99 (Garnier BB Cream Miracle Skin Perfector) as compared to regular creams that cost more depending upon the brand. Clearglow, launched by Maybelline, is a shine-free, clear stick that contains a mineral clay formula and salicylic acid to manage combination and oily skin and even claims to be sweat resistant. The stick also contains SPF 21/PA +++ that protects the skin from sun damage and is available in two shades. At the other end of the spectrum are the more expensive BB creams. Estee Lauder’s Cyber White Brilliant Cells Extra Intensive BB Creme. Kiehl’s has an Actively Correcting & Beautifying BB Cream which contains Vitamin C. This has an SPF 50 PA +++ UV protection as well.

While BB creams aren’t primarily age-defying brands like L’Oreal have launched anti-aging BB creams. In its International range, L’Oreal offers the anti-aging BB cream, Age Perfect BB Cream Instant Radiance.

  1. This article is really useful thanks! I’ve used BB creams for a while now, without really knowing why, apart from a reaction to a few compliments on my skin.

    I used to use a primer underneath foundation, but BB creams give a more dewy look and for everyday wear, I’ve ended up just wearing my BB cream on its own now.

    I must try the new CC creams to compare… and apparently DD is on its way!

  2. Bb cream is so good for summer makeup because it’s so light and has UV protection. I use Revlon photoready.

  3. I don’t know if you have ever tried Julep, but they offer a DD Cream which is amazing and has many of these benefits too. It would be interesting to compare BB, CC and DD creams.
